Washing machines

Washing machines last updated: 24/06/2014

Washing machines are divided into three sub-categories, by load capacity:

  • 7kg or under
  • 8kg
  • 9kg or over

In order to be featured on Top10, washing machine models must comply with EU Energy labelling regulation No 1061/2010 as well as with the following energy efficiency criteria:

  • have an Energy Efficiency Index rating of  < 46 (corresponding to the A+++ label class)
  • have a spin cycle efficiency class of A

Average performing model

The average performing model represents the following:

  • The most common load capacity in each sub-category (7kg, 8kg and 9kg)
  • The mid-point bracket of the market comprising models of the same Energy Label class, ranked by annual energy consumption
  • The model representing the price average for all models within the mid-point bracket

Annual energy consumption: the energy consumption per year, based on 220 average cycles, in kWh.

Annual running cost: the annual running cost in electricity for the product based on an electricity cost of 14.5p/kWh.

Average retail price: the average market price of the product determined by checking prices for the specific model advertised by at least three major retail websites.

Capacity: the maximum capacity of the washing machine for dry laundry in kg.

Construction: free-standing or built-in (integrated).

Dimensions: the unpacked dimensions of the product in mm.

Energy consumption per cycle: energy consumption per cycle in kWh for the 60°C programme at full load.

Energy label: the energy efficiency class according to the EU energy label. The classes range from A+++ (most efficient) to D (least efficient).

Energy Efficiency Index: the basis for the determination of the energy efficiency class. The lower the value, the more efficient is the washing machine. The Energy Label class corresponds to the EEI as follows:

Washing machines

Label class

Energy Efficiency Index (EEI)

EEI < 46

46 ≤ EEI < 52

52 ≤ EEI<59

59 ≤ EEI<68

68 ≤ EEI<77

77 ≤ EEI<87

EEI ≥ 87

Energy Saving Trust Recommended: whether or not the product is an Energy Saving Trust Recommended product.

Noise level on wash/spin cycle: the noise emissions during wash and spin cycles in decibels (dB), according to the EU energy label.

Spin efficiency class: the spin-drying efficiency class according to the EU energy label. The classes range from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient).

Spin speed: the maximum spin speed in revolutions per minute (rpm) according to suppliers’ declarations.

Water consumption per cycle: the water consumption for the standard cycle according to suppliers’ declarations, in litres.
