Refrigerators last updated: 25/3/2014

Due to the small number of products that currently meet the Top10 selection criteria, refrigerators and fridge-freezers are presented as a combined list on Top10. The list can be filtered according to show refrigerator only or fridge-freezers models, respectively.

In order to be featured on Top10, refrigerators must comply with Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) No 1060/2010 with regard to energy labelling of household refrigeration appliances, and meet the following criterion:

  • Have an Energy Efficiency Index rating of  < 22 (corresponding to the A+++ label class)

Average performing model selection

The average performing model is an anonymised model currently available on the market representing the approximate mid-point of the market in terms of price and energy efficiency.

Annual energy consumption: energy consumption per year in kWh, based on manufacturers’ declarations of standard test results for 24 hours.

Annual running cost: the annual running cost in electricity for the product based on the quoted annual energy consumption and an electricity cost of 14.5p/kWh.

Average retail price: the average market price of the product determined by checking prices for the specific model advertised by at least three major retail websites.

Climate Class: the climate class indicates the temperature range in which the product is designed to operate. Some appliances are designed to operate across multiple ranges. The definition of each is outlined below.

Climate class

Temperature range (°C)

10 – 32

16 – 32

ST (Sub-Tropical)

18 – 38

T (Tropical)

18 – 43

Construction: free-standing or built-in (integrated).

Dimensions: the unpacked dimensions of the product in mm.

Energy Efficiency Index: the basis for the determination of the energy efficiency class: the lower the value, the more efficient the refrigerator. The energy label corresponds to the EEI according to the table below.

Energy Efficiency Index (EEI)

EEI < 22

22 ≤ EEI < 33

33 ≤ EEI< 44

44 ≤ EEI< 55

55 ≤ EEI< 75

75 ≤ EEI< 95

EEI ≥ 95

Energy label: the energy efficiency class according to the EU energy label. The classes range from A+++ (most efficient) to D (least efficient). New appliances below an A+ rating are not allowed to enter the market under the terms of the Eco-Design Requirements for Energy-related Products (ErP) Directive.

Energy Saving Trust Recommended: whether or not the product is an Energy Saving Trust Recommended product.

Frost-free: whether the freezer compartment has a Frost-Free feature (if applicable)

Noise level:  the noise emissions of the product in operation, in dB.

Number of doors: the number of doors – usually 1 for refrigerators and 2 for fridge-freezers.

Star rating of coldest compartment: the star rating corresponds to the temperature of the compartment as follows:

Star class

Temperature (°C)

-18 or colder

Type: whether the product is a refrigerator only or a fridge-freezer.

Volume of refrigerator compartment: the volume of the refrigerator compartment, in litres.

Volume of freezer compartment: the volume of the freezer compartment in litres (if applicable).
